How Tax Reductions Benefit Wisconsin

Three years after leaving office, former governor Scott Walker has joined with the Institute for Reforming Government and Americans for Tax Reform to champion a plan to eliminate Wisconsin’s income tax. The proposal is based on a blueprint from Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy, which indicates eliminating the income tax would eventually result in tens of thousands of additional jobs and would drive workers to Wisconsin. Wisconsin has one of the highest income tax rates in the country. Raising the sales tax would help offset the lost revenue.

Julaine Appling responded favorably to this proposal: “In recent years, many Wisconsin families have been moving to states such as Florida and Texas where there is no income tax. When they leave, they don’t just impact the present, they also impact our future because their children likely won’t come back here for school or to work. If this plan is implemented, it would indeed help Wisconsin’s best resource—her families.”

RNC Update: Your Voice Was Heard

Earlier this year the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced that they were forming a LGBTQ Pride Coalition with the Log Cabin Republicans, a group that promotes LBGTQ+ values.

In response to this, many conservatives communicated their disappointment. Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, which headed up a campaign opposing this development, reported on Friday that your collective voices were heard and Ronna MCDaniel, the Republican National Committee Chairwoman, issued a formal letter stating that they will stay committed to their party platform strongly supporting religious liberty, family values and parental rights. Additionally, they “pledged to form a Conservative Advisory Working Group on the Platform which will be made up of conservative leaders who will be able to speak into the next party platform which will be adopted in 2024.”

In other words, your voice carries weight and your voice was heard!

While this is news worth celebrating, it is also a call to remain vigilant. As believers it is important that we stay knowledgeable on current political issues and boldly use our voices to hold our elected officials accountable for protecting and preserving God’s plan for marriage and family, the sanctity of human life, and religious freedom.

Study Suggests Religious Marriages Less Likely to End In Divorce

Christian Post reports that a recent Institute for Family Studies study suggests religious marriages are slightly less likely to end in divorce, because religion tends to discourage cohabitation, a known risk factor for divorce. The researchers note that “if we control for basic socioeconomic background and a woman’s educational career trajectory, the typical marriage of a woman with a religious upbringing is about ten percent less likely to end in divorce within the first fifteen years of marriage than the typical marriage of a woman with a non-religious upbringing.”

Julaine Appling responded to this news saying, “The link between cohabiting and religion is significant. Certainly, biblical Christianity does not condone this behavior, but the cultural pressure to cohabit before marriage is enormous. For the protection of our young people, families and churches need to take seriously teaching and even just talking about God’s good plan for marriage and human sexuality. As always, God’s way is the best way.

Religious Freedom Dismissed in NY Federal Court

Last week a federal judge dismissed a preliminary injunction aimed at protecting religious freedom, essentially ruling that a New York photographer cannot decline to photograph same-sex weddings because of her religious convictions. According to The Christian Post, a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, dismissed a preliminary injunction by Emilee Carpenter of Emilee Carpenter Photography against the state’s anti-discrimination law. LGBTQ advocates praised the decision as a huge win for equality and inclusivity.

Julaine Appling explained the gravity of this ruling: “Religious freedom, our First Freedom, must be actively safeguarded all the time. Thankfully, our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom are representing Carpenter and have vowed to appeal the decision to the second circuit court of appeals, noting rightly that this decision continues to go down a dangerous path of government compelling artists to speak messages against their religious beliefs.”
