Wisconsin Family Action joins Them Before Us, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, and more than 30 other state and national organizations to launch today the campaign Greater Than, with the goal of ultimately overturning Obergefell.
Children’s Needs Over Adult Desires
Wisconsin Family Action and the Greater Than campaign believe that children’s needs are greater than adult desires and ambitions. In 2015, the United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision in the case Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriage. By legalizing same-sex marriage, the Court also legalized same-sex parentage. In doing so, the Court’s redefinition of marriage effectively made mothers and fathers optional in law and culture.
By prioritizing children’s inherent rights to both their mother and father–essential for their stability, identity, safety, and thriving–the Greater Than campaign seeks to reverse the societal harms that have elevated adult desires over children’s well-being.
“Government should prioritize the interests of children over the desires of adults,” said Daniel Degner, President of Wisconsin Family Action. “Over the coming years, we will present our case for healthy families in Wisconsin that have married biological or adoptive mothers and fathers raising children.”
When Obergefell invented a “right” to marry a person of the same sex, the law was forced to accomplish what biology prohibits, making two adults of the same sex parents of a child. This new “right” required a decade-long overhaul of parenthood centered around adult desire rather than child need.
“The legal result of so-called adult equality has been the commodification of children, explained Katy Faust, Founder and President of the child-advocacy organization, Them Before Us, leading the Greater Than coalition. “Ask the children who have been starved of maternal or paternal love, acquired by predators, mass produced, trafficked across borders, struggling with identity confusion, or subjected to risky households if they feel ‘equal’ now. We will retake marriage for the sake of these children whose basic needs should never have been made less than in the eyes of the law.”
“The connection between natural marriage and child protection is primal, real, and unescapable. The Obergefell holding ultimately cannot stand against it,” Faust added.
Here in Wisconsin, supporters of same-sex marriage work tirelessly to promote their agenda by removing the words “mother” and “father” from our laws. Wisconsin Family Action firmly opposes these measures because we recognize that mothers and fathers are irreplaceable. In the name of liberating adults, the false ideology promoted by Obergefell harms children. Overturning Obergefell is a step towards a Wisconsin and an America where children can grow up in the safest environment possible: with their married, biological mom and dad.
