January 19th, Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, serves as a reminder for those of us engaged in the fight for life to keep persevering. In a culture that increasingly devalues life, we must keep fighting not only to change legislation but also to change the view of our culture.

Each of us bears a great responsibility to defend and promote life. The change in legislation that we are fighting for does not begin in the bills that we write but in the hearts of individuals. We must create a culture that celebrates life, and that celebration begins with each of us. While the left pushes a culture of death, brazenly asserting that children are a deterrent and distraction from the important things in life, our job is to demonstrate a different way of thinking. We must portray the biblical view that children are a great blessing and joy, one of the most important and wonderful parts of life.

Creating a culture of life begins with a worldview shift.

Creating a culture of life begins with a worldview shift.

We cannot address the abortion issue without looking at the root issue, immorality. In denying God’s design for marriage and sex, our culture has created an abundant “need” for abortion. The CDC reports that in 2021, 88% of women in Wisconsin who had abortions were unmarried.[i] A similar study published by Statista reported that, in 2022, there were around 38 reported abortions per 100 live births among unmarried women in the US. In comparison, among married women, only four abortions per 100 live births were reported.[ii] In order to stem the demand for abortion, our culture needs to get back to the good old-fashioned, biblical view of abstinence outside of marriage.

Tragically, some pregnancies are the result of abuse and harmful situations; however, in these situations, we must still recognize the sanctity of the life of the unborn child. In these difficult circumstances, we can support life by supporting expectant mothers.

Crisis pregnancy centers exist throughout Wisconsin offering assistance to expecting parents and mothers in need. Supporting these centers through donations and involvement is a wonderful way to demonstrate your support for the sanctity of human life.

Furthermore, we must create a culture where children are loved and valued. Raising children may seem an increasingly daunting task, or even risk, due to economical strain and the ever-shifting state of world events. We can support life by coming alongside expecting parents, and those who are already parents, offering support and assistance wherever possible.

In the legislative realm, Wisconsin Family Action and her fellow pro-life advocates continue to defend the lives of the unborn. While 2024 brought disappointments, our stance is unchanged, and our dedication is unwavering. This legislative session, as always, Wisconsin Family Action’s legislative agenda will include an aggressive pro-life component.

Last session, a number of pro-life bills were passed, including a package of several bills entitled Embrace Them Both because the bills were designed to protect unborn babies and to help women. The legislature passed several of these bills and a number of other pro-life bills. However, Governor Evers vetoed every pro-life bill he was presented this past session just as he has done throughout his time as governor. That reality, however, doesn’t deter us from forging ahead with bills designed to recognize the humanity of the preborn as well as protect women and to promote the natural family as the very best place for children to be brought up.

Please join us in praying that God would work in the hearts of our leaders and that they will pass pro-life legislation.

In a culture determined to undermine every aspect of God’s design down to its very foundation, marriage and family, the celebration of marriage, family, and life may seem backwards or even laughable, but we must not let cultural stigma deter us from our mission. Afterall, our mission is not simply to end abortion, but also to create a culture that embraces God’s design for sex, marriage, and family.

As Christians, part of our God-given mission is to defend those who cannot defend themselves. This Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, show your support for life and God’s design by becoming a voice for the voiceless, unloved, unwanted, or seemingly useless, of all sizes, ages, and levels of development.

From the moment of conception to the natural end of life, each human being bears immense intrinsic worth and value.

As the wickedness around us grows in impact and volume, may our resolve strengthen, may our voices be heard, and may God do a mighty work.
