We live in a rapidly transforming world. Events on the world scene, unprecedented technological advances, and upcoming political elections at times cast a shadow of uncertainty over our daily lives. In the midst of our earthly uncertainties, Resurrection Sunday compels us to consider the unfailing certainty that Christ’s resurrection offers us.
Renewed Focus
In the busyness of our daily lives, so often our focus shifts away from Christ. At times, the uncertainties surrounding us consume us. But instead of allowing our uncertainties to overcome us, we should let them point us to Christ. When we recognize the certainty that Christ’s resurrection brings, areas of earthly uncertainty fade in perspective. Our focus now centers on truth and hope instead of on fears and unknowns.
Meditation on Christ’s resurrection brings stability to every aspect of our lives. It brings peace to our personal trials and to our concerns about national and global events. Although we may not experience immediate resolution of our circumstances, we can experience peace as we go through them.
Centuries before Christ’s resurrection, Job declared with prophetic certainty, “I know that my Redeemer lives” (Job 19:25). We can experience that same life-transforming certainty. A renewed focus on Christ’s resurrection brings certainty to our faith, purpose, and future.
Unshakeable Faith
In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul describes Christ’s resurrection as the linchpin of our faith: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. . . . But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead” (1 Corinthians 15:17, 20). If Christ still lies dead in the tomb, then our faith is laughable. How absurd to expect to receive eternal life from someone who is dead! But Christ is risen. He is alive. Our faith has meaning.
No matter what hardships, sorrows, and uncertainties we face, our faith is unshakeable because it rests in our powerful Savior. 1 Peter 1:3 encourages us, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” Christ’s resurrection cements our faith in the bedrock of His death-conquering and soul-saving power. When our faith rests on the solid foundation of Christ’s resurrection, it is eternally unshakeable.
Fixed Purpose
Christ’s resurrection also points us to our highest calling. Probably all of us feel the tug of many different causes and callings in our lives. Parents are called to raise their children. Citizens are called to participate in their communities. Employees are called to work. Students are called to study. While each of these callings is good and necessary, in Christ, each of us has a higher calling, an eternally fixed purpose.
The new life Christ’s resurrection provides compels us to share the meaning of Christ’s resurrection with others. If Christ’s resurrection has transformed our lives, then how can we remain silent? We must tell others!
Two thousand years ago, Christ’s resurrection compelled his disciples to share the gospel with others. Each of the eleven remaining disciples of Christ dedicated his life to proclaiming the gospel and building Christ’s church despite persecution. We too are called to share Christ’s resurrection with those around us. While our other roles and callings may shift and change throughout our lives, proclaiming Christ’s resurrection remains our fixed purpose through every change and through every stage of life. And often, rather than clouding our eternal purpose, times of earthly uncertainty provide us with greater opportunities to share the message of hope in Jesus Christ.
Secure Future
Finally, Christ’s resurrection brings certainty to our future. While the future events of our earthly lives are hidden, we know with certainty that those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ will experience eternity with Him. Probably the most well-known verse in the entire Bible, John 3:16, tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
In the face of a world full of uncertainties both big and small, Christ’s resurrection points us to our secure future. Those in Christ will experience an eternal end to uncertainties and enjoy fellowship with Him forever.
This Easter, we hope that the certainty Christ’s resurrection provides will fill your heart with joy no matter what earthly uncertainties you may be facing. Christ’s sacrifice and glorious resurrection are life-transforming and hope-giving. Rest your life on the certainty of Christ’s resurrection.
