The recent actions of President Trump’s Administration to restrict children’s access to harmful sex-rejecting procedures has culminated in a temporary win for children in Wisconsin.
A Change in Policy
After releasing a significant study in November demonstrating the overwhelmingly harmful and irreversible results of mutilating practices such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and transition surgeries for minors, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced last month that hospitals that continue to provide these damaging procedures will lose Medicaid funding. HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. recognizes gender mutilation for what it is: “malpractice.” He said, “Under my leadership, and answering President Trump’s call to action, the federal government will do everything in its power to stop unsafe, irreversible practices that put our children at risk. This Administration will protect America’s most vulnerable. Our children deserve better — and we are delivering on that promise.”
In response to these policy changes, this week, two prominent Wisconsin hospitals – Children’s Wisconsin and UW Health – announced that they are halting what they refer to as “gender affirming care” for the time being. Both hospitals blamed the federal government for these changes demonstrating their compliance to be unwanted. But, despite their unwillingness, we can be grateful that at least for now, children in Wisconsin will be spared from irreversible chemical castration and surgical mutilation in our state.
Misled Backlash
The begrudging compliance of these hospitals reflects the disconnect between science and the medical world. Despite the growing body of research that demonstrates the lasting physical, mental, and emotional harm of these false medical interventions for minors struggling with gender dysphoria, the medical world persists in offering these damaging interventions whenever possible.
While this pause in these so-called treatments has caused an uproar from transgender supporters, a biblical worldview sees these developments through a different lens. Wisconsin Family Action’s Policy Director, Sam Krebs, explains, “This is excellent news for the children of Wisconsin, especially those struggling with gender dysphoria. We believe that affirming a mistaken identity isn’t loving or compassionate or medically sound. By these organizations saying they are going to stop these procedures, that is a win for Wisconsin.”
A Chance for Children to Heal
We are thankful that the current administration refutes the lie that children must go through a life-altering transition to heal from gender dysphoria. While many might characterize those who oppose so-called “gender affirming care” to be unloving, the truth is exactly the opposite. We deeply care about children experiencing gender confusion, and we want them to know the truth: God designed their bodies with a purpose, He loves them just as they are, and they don’t have to mutilate their bodies to make peace with the gender they were born with.
Science agrees with God’s design. Given the reality of biology and the overwhelmingly negative results of these counterfeit “therapies,” it is neither loving nor kind to promote them – especially for children.
For too long, members of the medical community have supported what they call transgender “treatments” for minors with little to no evidence that they provide any benefit. We hope that this pause in these harmful procedures will encourage minors struggling with gender dysphoria to reconsider their desire to go through with a damaging transition and will give them the opportunity to go through childhood unmutilated.
