This past Monday, the Wausau school board decided to let administratively proposed guidelines for dealing with transgender students continue to be implemented. Among other provisions, the guidelines permit boys who identify as girls to use the girls’ restrooms, locker rooms and shower rooms and even on school-sponsored trips stay overnight in the girls’ rooms and vice versa, and call on staff to use the pronouns the students request and warn school officials not to inform parents their child is transgendering unless the student agrees to letting them make that contact.
WFA president Julaine Appling says, “The Wausau school board made a huge mistake here. They are pandering to a vocal minority. Many concerned citizens have contacted board members and showed up at 4 different meetings letting them know these special protections compromise the privacy rights and well-being of the vast majority of the students. The board has chosen to ignore the citizens and the safety and protection of the students.”
