Tonight the Racine Common Council will consider proposed changes to the city’s nondiscrimination ordinances.  In this series of proposals from Alderman Melissa Lemke they will add the words, “gender identity” to multiple areas of the municipal code.  They define gender identity as “the actual or perceived gender-related identity, expression, appearance or mannerisms, or other gender-related characteristics of an individual, regardless of the individual’s designated sex at birth.”  They also expand in the city’s municipal code definitions to “bisexual” “gay” “lesbian”, “queer” “questioning” sexual orientation” “transgender”.  The proposed language would also require that the mayor appoint one who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community to the commission on affirmative action and human rights.

DANGER: This municipal code would impact housing, employment, and other areas as well.  The agenda tonight seeks to advance this proposal to the Finance and Personnel Committee.
