Writing for the gospelcoalition.com, Cameron Cole urges parents not to see their kids as lifelong projects that must be managed to successful living or burdens that will one day be lessened when they leave the home. Cole, who lost his firstborn son before he was 4 years old, reminds parents children are gifts from a gracious God—gifts to be responsibly cared for but to also be held loosely with gratitude. Even when a child is especially challenging, remembering that child is a gift helps ease the frustration and helps parents learn the lessons God is teaching with this “hard gift.”
The Bible tells us “children are a heritage from the LORD” and that the man who has children is blessed. Seeing children as gifts is difficult on those especially trying days, but taking just a few quiet moments to thank God for His gracious gift to you in your children and to ask for patience, strength and wisdom will go a long ways to a happier household.
