AT THE CAPITOL: 4 Bills Protecting God’s Plan for our Families
Simple Ways To Celebrate Memorial Day
WARNING: School District Policy Violates Parental Rights
Saving for Your Child’s College Education
IN THE MEDIA
Thank you for praying for our Legislative Team yesterday! We believe the testimony we offered in the hearings presented truth in an appropriate and helpful way.
Yesterday, Wisconsin Family Action’s Legislative Team, Julaine Appling and Micah Pearce, spent the day attending 3 different hearings in the capitol. Julaine provided testimony on four different bills in those hearings.
AB 195/SB 323 and AB 196/SB 322: These bills are the Protect Women’s Sports bills. The bills stop biological males from participating in girls’/women’s sports. AB 195/SB 323 prohibits this at the UW System schools and the technical training schools, both publicly funded institutions of higher learning. AB 196/SB322 does the same thing in Wisconsin’s public K-12 schools and private schools participating in a parental choice program. AB 195 was heard in the Assembly Committee on Colleges & Universities, and AB 196 was heard in the Assembly Education Committee. The Senate bills were heard in the Senate Committee on Human Services, Children and Families.
SB 260: This bill would close loopholes in the law to make it clear that the UW Madison and the UW Medical School cannot have any kind of funding relationship with Planned Parenthood to train residents to do abortions or to provide UW doctors to Planned Parenthood to do abortions.
SB 261: This bill would add additional information that would need to be tracked and reported after an induced abortion is performed. The additional information includes reporting the sex of the baby if that can be visually determined and if there is any fetal anomaly. The bill would also require reporting the identity of the facility where the induced abortion takes place. The author of the bill, Senator Jacque, offered an amendment on Tuesday with a number of additional points of information that would need to be determined and reported.
The above two pro-life bills were heard in the Senate Committee on Human Resources, Children and Families.
You can view recordings of two of the three hearings HERE. Wiseye will require you to have an account to see these archived recordings, but the account is FREE. We would urge you to have a Wiseye account because this is the stat\ government’s official partner for the video transmission of press conferences, legislative floor periods, committee meetings, State Supreme Court hearings and administrative meetings, and more. Recordings of the hearings yesterday are available for AB 196 and SB 260, SB 261, SB 322, and SB 323 (these 4 bills were all heard in the same hearing). No recording is available for AB 195. Julaine speaks in the Assembly Education hearing on AB 195 at 2:14:40. She speaks in the Senate hearing on SB 260 at 3:07 and on SB 261, SB 322, and SB 323 at 3:59.
All of these bills are important to help protect our families here in Wisconsin. Watch for an email with information on contacting your elected officials on these bills! We’ll use our new action center for that communication.
Memorial Day is Monday. With some planning, families can make this a special time. Chuck Bentley writing for Christian Post offers some ways to honor this day in which we remember those in our military who gave their all in defense of our country. Bentley suggests flying the flag, and if possible inviting the family of a fallen soldier to your home for a cookout. Share the reason for this day. Have children recite a poem, sing a song or do a reading. Spend time in prayer for our military and our country and honor the minute of silence at 3 p.m.
Julaine Appling encourages families to be intentional about the way they relax and have fun on Memorial Day: “Memorial Day can so easily become just a day off work or school with a summer kick-off cookout. And that’s not wrong. But this special day can be an incredible teachable moment for families to help build into the younger generations an understanding of the day and an appreciation for God’s blessing and protection on our country through the sacrifices of others.”
We hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful Memorial Day!
Earlier this year we got a call from a concerned mother whose daughter attended school in the Kettle Moraine school district. The mother explained that her 12 year-old daughter had been struggling with gender dysphoria. In an effort to care for their daughter her parents instructed the teachers and staff at her public school to call her by her given name and refer to her with feminine pronouns. The school district officials refused.
The mother asked what she could do to fight for her parental rights. We encouraged her to take immediate legal action by calling Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) and speak with Attorney Luke Berg.
Last Friday WILL issued a press release giving official notice to the Kettle Moraine School District:
“A fundamental and long-recognized ‘inherent right protected by the Wisconsin (and United States) Constitution is the right of parents to ‘direct the upbringing and education of children under their control.’ This means parents are the primary decision-makers with respect to their minor children—not their school, or even the children themselves.
“But the Kettle Moraine School District has adopted a policy that disregards parents’ decision about how their children will be addressed at school. This policy violates parents’ constitutional rights.”
Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council are grateful God used us to connect these parents and their daughter with WILL and get the help they needed. In a very real sense, a daughter has been rescued.
Financial investments are vital to making sure this kind of work doesn’t stop. To support and protect constitutional parental rights and God’s plan for families, CLICK HERE.
On Monday this week, Governor Evers proclaimed this coming Saturday as 529 College Savings Plan Day. Wisconsin’s 529 savings plan allows parents to save money for college expenses, including tuition, room and board, fees, books, computers and more, for both public and private institutions, as well as for K-12 education expenses, both public and private. By investing in a 529 account, parents can reduce their taxable income, dollar for dollar, while adding to their invested principle.
Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council encouraged parents to research whether or not this would be a wise option for stewarding both their finances and their children’s education.
“Many Christian families aren’t aware of this tax-saving educational investment opportunity. It may not be for every family, but for some it may be very helpful, especially for those who don’t qualify for K-12 vouchers but want to put their children in a private school. We encourage parents to at least research this opportunity. Learn more about Wisconsin’s 529 Educational Savings Plans HERE.
