Poll Shows More Parents Likely To Consider Homeschooling
Thank you, Governor Evers?

Recent polling by RealClear Opinion Research indicates that more than 40% of American parents are likely to consider homeschooling their children after getting their first taste of it during the COVID-19 pandemic. The poll also indicated that many parents report a greater appreciation for their child’s schoolteachers after having to step in and be more actively engaged in the formal education of their children. In addition, the survey showed 64% support school choice, including 59% of self-identified Democrats.

On March 25, 2020, Governor Evers directed Department of Health Services (DHS) Secretary-designee Andrea Palm to issue a Safer at Home order that closed Wisconsin schools for the balance of the school year. Even though the Wisconsin Supreme Court recently ruled that the extension of this original order was unconstitutional and unenforceable, the court did say the Governor and the Department of Health Services had the authority to close schools. The closing of schools for over two months basically put many parents in a kind of “home-schooling” situation.

Wisconsin Family Action strongly believes parents should be involved in the education of their children and in the installation of a proper worldview.  For millennia, long before government schools came about, there was simply no question that parents were responsible for educating their children. Wisconsin parents interested in homeschooling next year, can still make that choice. Visit for more information.

Memorial Day 2020: Making It Meaningful One Family at a Time

WFA president Julaine Appling asks, “Do you have plans made for next Monday, May 25? I hope you do. It’s Memorial Day. And that should mean some special planning.

“I realize that in most communities in The Badger State Memorial Day won’t be commemorated as it has been for decades. Already in my community we’ve been told there will be no parade. No special service at the     bridge with wreaths being thrown into the river while we all stand silently listening to Taps being played and ‘Sleep, Soldier Boy, Sleep’ solemnly sung.  No service at Veterans’ Park, no recitation of the Gettysburg   Address, no laying of the wreaths representing each branch of the military.  I’ll miss all of those activities, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give Memorial Day and what and who it represents its just due.

“Plan ahead to have the entire family participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.  Officially this is considered a ‘moment of silence,’ but for Christians, this is a wonderful opportunity after the minute of silence to pray together and thank God for those who have given their lives to secure our freedoms and our way of life.”

If You’ve Ever Played This Popular Game, You’ll Understand:
“Overturned Safer-at-Home Order Results in Local Whack-a-Mole”

Rick Esenberg and Anthony LoCoco of the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) write, “On May 13, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Emergency Order #28, the general shutdown and quarantine order issued by the Department of Health Services (“DHS”) and sometimes referred to as the “Safer at Home Order.” The ruling ushers in what can perhaps be dubbed “Part III” of ongoing governmental attempts to address COVID-19 in Wisconsin: the advent of a patchwork of local-level regulations aimed at controlling the spread of the coronavirus.

“Unlike state-wide orders such as Order #28 which take a one-size-fits-all approach, local orders will necessarily be narrower in geographic scope with a much closer fit between the ‘facts on the ground’ and the restrictions the order imposes.”

Just this week Governor Evers stated he has “given up on any statewide rules to control the coronavirus” leaving the decision-making regarding restrictions to local government.

Wisconsin Family Council Signs on to Letter Asking for Protection of Churches/Ministries

“First Liberty Institute informed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday that faith leaders representing millions of believers in the United States fear ‘a swarm of lawsuits blaming houses of worship and religious ministries for any person who attended a religious gathering or received food or shelter from a charity or ministry and subsequently contracted COVID-19.’

“The legal organization urged Congress to protect groups of believers from lawsuits related to the coronavirus and the manifold orders currently in place.

“The statement was accompanied by a letter to members of Congress, which was signed by hundreds of religious and conservative leaders…”

Julaine Appling, Wisconsin Family Council president, says, “We are honored to be one of the organizations that signed this letter. We are grateful for First Liberty’s proactive work to protect churches and ministries. The reality is today many are very quick to file lawsuits with or without merit. Churches have admirably risen to the challenge of ministering effectively during this pandemic; they should be thanked and protected, not threatened with lawsuits.”
