Sports Betting Is Now Permitted in the Oneida’s Casino
The Rule of Law Protected Wisconsin Citizens in Recent WI Supreme Court Case
A Needed Addition to Wisconsin’s Women’s Right to Know Law

Human Autonomy vs. the Sovereignty of God
IN THE MEDIA

Last week Gov. Tony Evers and the Oneida Nation signed an agreement to allow betting on sporting events for the first time in Wisconsin. The parties said they have amended the tribe’s gaming compact with the state to allow wagering on professional sporting events including NFL, NBA and MLB games, professional sports drafts and nationally televised award shows. The deal does not permit betting on college sports, elections or events with participants under age nineteen. Wagering would be allowed at the Oneida’s casino in Green Bay. Online wagers will be permitted if the person is on tribal land.

Julaine Appling, President of Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council, responded to this news by encouraging parents to talk to their children about gambling:  “Governor Evers claims this change in the compact, which many are not even sure is legal, is about generating revenue for the state. That’s a sad way to govern because in gambling in order for the state to win, its citizens must lose. Sports betting is especially appealing to young people. Parents, now’s the time to talk to your children about this issue and its very addictive nature.”

The Rule of Law Protected Wisconsin Citizens in Recent WI Supreme Court Case

The City of Racine Public Health Department issued an order on November 12, 2020, closing all school buildings in the City of Racine, private and public, from November 27 to January 15, as a means of addressing COVID-19. The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) filed an original action to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on November 19, on behalf of a group of parents, schools, and membership associations. The Court granted WILL’s original action and issued a temporary injunction blocking the City of Racine’s school closure order before it could go into effect on November 27.

Most recently, the Wisconsin Supreme Court unanimously declared that this order from the City of Racine’s public health officer closing all schools, public and private, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, is invalid and lacked proper legal authority.

In response to this news, Julaine Appling commented: “This decision is encouraging in part because it shows that the rule of law is still operating. Emergencies do not mean that we must be subject to the whim of government officials. Our US and state constitutions and statutory laws are for all times and situations. Rule of law restricts officials from over-reach even during public crises.”

A Needed Addition to Wisconsin’s Women’s Right to Know Law

Earlier this week Celine Castronuovo, writing for The Hill, reported that Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards signed a bill into law that requires doctors administering medicine-induced abortions in the state to inform patients that they may stop the pregnancy termination process halfway through by taking the abortion reversal pill.

According to LiveAction, a Pro-life Advocacy group in America, the abortion reversal pill works by overriding the abortion pill. They explained it this way:

“The abortion pill regimen [RU-486] works in two parts. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone from reaching the baby, essentially starving her and cutting her off from her source of nourishment. The intent is to cause the baby to die in the womb. The second pill, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later to induce contractions, forcing the mother to expel the body of her dead child from her uterus.”

“The abortion pill reversal process involves giving a woman large doses of progesterone in an effort to counteract the effects of mifepristone. This same hormone is commonly given to women whose pregnancies are at risk of miscarriage.”

Julaine Appling commented that a similar law should be added to Wisconsin’s current legislation: “This is something Wisconsin’s Women’s Right to Know law needs — and needs as soon as we can make it happen. A bill doing just that landed on Governor Evers’ desk two years ago, but he vetoed it within 24 hours. Keeping this abortion-reversal information from women is wrong; abortionists need to be required to tell women the truth about this option.”

Human Autonomy vs.. the Sovereignty of God

“In the beginning God” is a reality unlike any other. We are created beings, created by a wise, loving God, Who is incapable of making mistakes. The creature asserts its autonomy — the right to self-govern believing that they are a self-made self-determining being — against the Creator to our peril. Autonomy is what Lucifer asserted — and He ran right smack into the reality of a holy, righteous God.

Today, our culture is desperately clinging to human autonomy at a high price. The impact and consequences are clearly shown in the issue of abortion and the sexual revolution.

“A woman’s right to choose. My body, my choice.” The pro-choice argument is that as an autonomous person, I am the only one who gets to determine what happens to my body. But the truth of the matter is that there is another human being involved in this life-taking decision the woman claims is hers and hers alone to make. That’s a reality that rightly should limit the mother’s autonomy.

In the sexual revolution, human autonomy is displayed in overriding the reality that it takes both male and female to create new life. Egg and sperm must get together to make a new human. That’s a scientific reality. So, two men or two women cannot, acting as an autonomous couple, cannot create a new human being on their own. It’s just not possible. They have to go outside themselves and involve the opposite sex to do that. That’s an uncomfortable truth and reality for those who want everyone to believe that same-sex “marriage” is the same as heterosexual marriage — it’s not!

In every area of life, our proclaimed autonomy will at some point be met with God-written reality. As humans, we can make our choices, but we don’t get to decide the consequences. That is beautiful and powerful news for Believers. We serve a God whose way is not only the best way but Who leads us to what is best for us — our good is on the forefront of His mind!

Sometimes it’s scary not to have complete autonomy of our lives. For instance, I wish I could do away with for good the cancer I’m dealing with and pour every single moment and resource I have into making God known through the work I do here at Wisconsin Family Action and Wisconsin Family Council. But, that’s not reality. What is reality, however, is that my great, good, generous God is involved in every detail of my life and working all things together for my good whether or not I understand, just as He is for each of you reading this.

We do well to live our lives in obedience to our great God and to lovingly show and share the truth to those around us who are so very often on a collision course with reality.

In closing, I’ll leave you with these words from Corrie Ten Boom, “Never be afraid to trust your unknown future to a known God.”
