September 25, 2013 – Wisconsin can do better than Common Core
MADISON, WI — Wisconsin Family Action President Julaine Appling today issued a statement on Governor Walker’s call for public hearings on Common Core State Standards:
“Wisconsin Family Action agrees with the Governor’s call for public hearings on Common Core State Standards. The informational hearing held on Common Core State Standards earlier this year raised a number of questions that remain unanswered.
“The time has come for these public hearings to be held. The budget calls for them and they have not been scheduled. The public is asking for answers to questions. Common Core State Standards leave little or no room for local and state evaluation or modification and provide no mechanism for doing so. Wisconsin could opt out, but if the Standards are already being implemented, that proposition is unlikely.
“Governor Walker is right—Wisconsin can do better than Common Core State Standards. We have bright, talented people in the Badger State who can give our students standards that will raise the bar and raise expectations as well as prepare them for the future.”
